Melisa is a young teenage girl who likes any vintage stuff either an old briefcase or anything with ‘vintage’ look. She always get pick by her classmates for her bewildered taste for a teenager of her age. Her mother always say to her, ‘Melisa, never too mind on what they said. If they don’t want to be friend with you, brush it up. Stand strong and never lose yourself.’ She misses her all the time.

A school holiday has arrived and Melisa could not wait for it. After she came back from the school, she ran to her bedroom and flew herself to her bed. Yes, tomorrow is the beginning of an adventure said her heart.

‘Mel, could you not run like that again?!’ said her dad, Mr. Samuel in front of her door.

‘Okay’ shout Melisa.

So what to do today? She’s asking to herself. Face the blank celling. She then opened the door and heads to the kitchen.

‘What’s cooking today, Dad?’

‘Spaghetti and beef Bolognese.’

‘Okay’

She grabbed fork and plate and munched herself with the spaghetti.

‘So what’s your plan for the school holiday?’ asked her dad.

‘I think I want to visit any vintage stores somewhere’

‘Okay just name it and I’ll drive you there’

YES! She smiled and continues eating.

‘Oh, I forgot to tell you. I think I should bring you to your mother’s favorite vintage store. It’s my friend’s store actually’

She smiled again.

That night, she could not wait to go to that store and lost to her dream world.

***

Ms. Brandon. Her full name is Misses Patricia Brandon. She used to be a young beautiful lady with a wonderful career as an announcer at the small radio station. Past is just a past. That was her past. Now, she is lying on a cold and empty room with only her bed and her alone only at the Daisy Hospital. She’s married before but her husband died in the post of Second World War. No children. Friends? Few of them. Well most of them have passed away already. She just made friends to her fellow other patients like her and the nurses there. She misses her past life.

‘How are you, Ms. Brandon?’ said the new nurse, Jessie.

‘Please just call me Patricia, dear. And I am fine. I just feel lonely’

‘What do you mean lonely, Patricia? You could just go to the Centre and meet people’

‘I am not feeling like to’

‘Oh okay, so here’s your medicine and water. Don’t forget to eat this and get a rest.’

‘I will, dear.’

She never forgets her medicine. She is not in the mood for it now. She misses her past life and all flashbacks come to her simultaneously. She remembered her first job as an announcer. Her boss was strict but gentle; her colleagues were fun and always cheer her up. The moment she’s waiting for was when she could hear her own voice and believed it was her voice on air. What a feeling. She did not forget that moment.

Everything changed after the war. She could not get back her job because there was no more radio station standing. She lost her husband and her career. Even so, she continues to start up her journey as a diner at the very small dining restaurant. For years, she worked there and got promoted as a supervisor there. Time flies. She ended up here, alone in her bed at this gloomy hospital. She doesn’t want to complain and yet blessed with the nurses and some other patients. Yet she just misses everything back then.

‘Dad, can we go now?’

‘Wait’

He starts the engine and heads out to the road.

I can’t wait to see that store, her heart said.

After thirty minutes, they arrived to that store. Melisa is so happy and waits for her Dad to find any empty parking space. She could not compose her expression and left her dad behind.

When she entered to that store, everything astonished to her and she went to other sections- accessories.

‘Hye there, little miss. Looking for something?’ said Mrs Pearl.

‘Oh, I just looking around and perhaps buy something here. And I am with Dad actually.’

‘And here I am, you’re so fast Mel and next time, don’t leave me like that’ urged his dad.

‘Oh hye, Sam! Is this your daughter?’ asked Mrs. Pearl.

‘Yes, she is.’

They both then have a conversation and Melisa just continues to search for her ‘stuff’ which she did not know what it is.

Her eyes caught something sparkles. It is a beautiful and antique looking necklace.

I have to have this. No I need to buy this. Her heart demands.

‘Dad, can I have this?’

‘Wow, what a beautiful necklace. You’re truly like your mom’

‘Aaa, that necklace. Someone sold that to me because she needs some money. I bought it but I had no idea what to do with it. Then, my husband died and left me with this store. So I think maybe that necklace will meet her owner.’ Mrs. Pearl explained.

Her dad bought it for her and they went home.

Maybe that necklace will meet her owner. Melisa can’t get off the last words of what Mrs. Pearl said. She shocked her head and try to forget it.

One necklace. Two souls. One beautiful friendship.

‘I could not believe it’

‘Me either dear’

A necklace has found her owner.

Melisa joined a voluntary community as a volunteer to the Elders section at Daisy hospital. She did not know Mrs. Patricia Brandon before. They met when Melisa happened to be Patricia’s helper. They had so much fun and shared all their stories together. They don’t mind the age, but the friendship.

One day, Melisa dropped her necklace and Mrs. Brandon recognized it. She shed into tears and explained to Melisa that it was her necklace. A precious necklace her late husband gave her, but she had to sell it because she had no money at that time. Melisa could not be more than happy for Mrs. Brandon and gave it to Patricia. Mrs. Brandon hugged Melisa. She was so grateful and happy.

They hold their hand together and enjoyed the sunset near the hospital.

‘Thank you’ said Mrs. Brandon.

‘You’re welcome’ replied Melisa and smiled.

THE END
