Whenever I ask people of my age what are they living in this world for, most of them would say that their importance now is to study for the future and get a scholarship. When I ask scholars the same question, they would answer that it is to concentrate with their education and never be astray. They add if you had a degree, might as well aim higher for a masters or a PHD. Frankly, some would even answer me, they live to eat and sleep. At the time, I was content agreeing and accepting all these thoughts and I thought I have found the perfect answer to my question.

Now on reflection many years later, I consider our thoughts to be less than ideal. I think being a human being is more than just to become an academically succesful person. Yes, it is also logically true that to stay alive, we human need to eat and sleep. We study to get scholarships, a job and to have money. And we search for food to keep breathing and living. But is it just all about that? What does it really mean to be a human? What makes us different from other living and non-living creatures in this world? How do we classify and ratify what actually makes us human?

Science might categorize human by their sociological or psychological behavior. However, we know that being human is more than just the sum of our thoughts and actions. Based on biological answer, if our DNA is consistent with Homo sapiens, you are human. Nevertheless, we all know that humanity is a lot more complex and slightly different than that. What it means to be a human being is not just having highly developed brain, a face, eyes, hands, legs, or being able to drive a car or to own a house. Being a human is to have the ability to differentiate what is right and what is wrong as well as to have realistic thoughts and to think deeply beyond the real things in this world.

Rationality is basically the difference for humanity, and what seperated us from the animals. Human being is technically and morally unique from all other species on Earth. Technically, only human beings have the capability to reason from a mechanical standpoint. We human have consciousness. For example, if a chimpanzee is given pens or pencils with a paper as well as guidance on how to write she probably could not accomplished the task, because she cannot rationalize like us, human beings.

Morally, behavioral of humans are various but what is interesting is our ability to learn. Learning allows human beings to solve more complicated problems and learn not to repeat the same mistake all over again. Besides, of the entire creation man has the highest capacity to acquire knowledge. Furthermore, we humans have traditional and ethnics long times that we believe in sin and graciousness. We have to live together with our human species and stay connected to each other. We cannot exist companionless in this world.

Being a human being is to have the ability to build relationships with anyone and everyone around us. What it means to be a human being is to have connections. What allows us to grow and expand our limits, to advance and succeed in doing many things, and to be closer to our own species in order to be successful is our ability to create relationship and connections. This is what makes us truly unique and great. This connection is the most essential thing that makes us who we are.

"Surely We have honoured the children of Adam. We have put the land and the sea under their control, given them sustenance and have exalted them above many of those whom We have created" (Surah Al-Isra’, 17:70)

Are we human unique? Yes, we humans are definitely unique. As all of us know, what makes us unique and different from other beings, both living and non-living is that our Creator has given us the ability to drive cars, build sky-high buildings, create masterpieces cuisine, learn history and discover things no one would think of. If we are to be compared to animals, animals also have relationships upon each other too. How animals build relationships and connections actually differs to what humans do even though animals share the same obvious quality and characteristics.

In the past, human have developed and evolution cognitive that is the cause humans can create and introduce new things to stay alive. Few differences in our abilities led to a unique connection between human minds. Collaboration is allowing us to learn, leading to advancing cultural development and the complete transformation of the human mind. For example, human being nowadays has been living in a world of technologies. Today, most of us depend too much on IT and gadgets.

Human beings are not perfect and never will be, but we are special and unique. What it really means to be human today is more than just having largely developed brains or being able to own what you wanted. We need to have good brains along with understanding and awareness as well as morals and excellent behaviors, so that we can change the way we typically think and society as whole.
